Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin (the stratum corneum). It is made up of skin cells (corneocytes) held together by a “lipid matrix” of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. It acts like a shield, locking in moisture, regulating sebum and protecting against irritants.

It means the formula hydrates across multiple layers of the stratum corneum (your skin’s outer barrier), not just the surface.
In our clinical trials, this was measured using a tape strip test. Very thin layers of the skin’s surface are gently lifted with specialized adhesive strips and then analyzed for water content. By repeating this across layers, scientists can track how deep the moisturization goes; in our case, up to 10 layers (at least). From a subject safety perspective, it is not ethical to test any deeper. We then rely on other measures such as rate of water loss (TEWL- trans epidermal water loss) through our skin to determine long term impact of Boundless on barrier health.
