Yes. HPR (the retinoid in Own Time) is significantly gentler than traditional retinol, retinal or retinoic acid. It doesn't require the conversion process that causes irritation in most people. Start on alternate nights for the first week as a matter of good practice, then use nightly. You're unlikely to experience the purging or peeling that puts people off retinoids.

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that are considered the “gold standard” in dermatology for skin renewal. They work by binding to receptors in skin cells, which speeds up cell turnover and stimulates collagen production. Over time, this helps smooth fine lines, even skin tone, improve texture, and keep pores clear.

In order to work, traditional retinoids first need to convert into active form in the skin through a one step or two step process. This conversion process produces inflammatory byproducts which can disrupt the skin barrier and cause irritation and excessive dryness.
HPR (Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate), used in Own Time, binds directly to retinoic receptors without needing conversion. This means faster and visible results without the peeling, irritation, or adjustment phase of traditional retinoids. -

We allowed our test subjects to use Own Time around the eyes, and no adverse events were reported. That said, we recommend gently running your fingers around the eye socket bone and crow’s feet area at the end of application to avoid overapplying. Do not apply too close to the upper or lower eyelids.

No. While our testing data suggests what you are experiencing is rare, it is not worrying. It just means your skin is asking for a slightly slower ramp up or needs additional barrier support. Follow dosage instructions. Use alternate nights to begin with and follow up with Boundless or a barrier cream of your choice.

While Own Time will help stave off blocked pores, and so potentially reduce bumpiness and mild breakouts, if you have severe acne, this will not be enough. Please consult a dermatologist who can recommend the right retinoid regime.
